Brimstone Cup

In case you didn't know it, the Brimstone Cup is the name given to every FC Dallas and Chicago Fire match. More importantly, today's Brimstone Cup marked the kickoff of the MLS season and another milestone in the buildup to the World Cup. Yahoo!

ABC was kind enough to broadcast this game on network television and both teams were kind enough to respond with some decent play and five goals. But the rust was evident as many open forwards roamed the box and fatigue set in for the teams in the second half.

I was most interested to see how Chris Rolfe of the Chicago Fire would play. He's a guy who's had a couple of looks with the national team and shows a good bit of promise in my eyes. Chris did not disapppoint. He created the first goal, scored the second and got robbed by the keeper for a third. Chicago dropped the match 3-2 but Rolfe was making opportunities with his quickness and dribbling skills. At closer to five feet than six feet, he'll never be considered a target forward but I don't mind that if he's creating chances. Can he do great things on the national team? I believe he's got a good shot to do so.

Let the MLS season begin and hopefully a couple of players like Rolfe will play themselves onto the national team. Up next...NE vs. LA tonight on ESPN2 in a rematch of last year's MLS Cup. (Bostrom)
